Working as a client serving role in Singapore is mentally exhausting
I am sorry for spreading negativity but urghhh I wish to ask those in client serving roles like health care, retail, F&B or even office workers, how do you all survive mean and nasty clients who do not treat you with respect like a normal human being?
I feel that it is not as exhausting serving clients from other countries, for some reasons. The clients/consumers are so demanding and unreasonable, they demand for stars in the sky but they are unwilling to pay a dime.
They would also stoop very low to get what they wanted, even though we have done our best to serve them. It is so mentally exhausting. Trying not to take everything personally, but I don’t get why people can be so mean.

- People are mean and unreasonable to get what they want because in Singapore it works. When people make complaints or kick a fuss, suddenly they are given priority and treated like VIPs.
No way to get around this unless as a country we stop pandering to the whims of the badly behaved and instead reward/prioritise those that play by the rules.
Once you knock off, go eat something delicious or plan an activity you enjoy to unwind. These people should not be allowed to live rent free in our thoughts - Have a thick skin. If you dont have a thick skin when working in customer service line, sorry you’re in for a rough time.
Personally working in the retail banking side, for every 1 nasty customer i face i have 5 nice customers that are polite and have great conversations with, asking how’s my day and generally very understanding.
Sure, there will be nasty customers along the way. Sometimes it’s all about perspective. There will never be a perfect day with no nasty customers. But just give your best and if they still treat you like shit, they won’t stop me from going home after work and feeling good about having knocked off from work.
Colleagues also help. My seniors all have their fair share of experiences and we’ll all just gossip about it and laugh it off at their absurd requests.
Over time, you’ll get used to being in the customer service line, all the best. - 2/10 customers are bound to be a-holes. Just remind yourself that there were 8 nice/normal ones that appreciated your service and respected you as a person. I’m in a frontline job as well and majority are nice/alright folks. But the nasty ones can really make your blood boil and ruin your day.
