Boss Say Cannot Use Sick Leave to Go Holiday, End Up I Take No Pay Leave Instead
Last year end hor, I plan one good good trip overseas, just nice to relax after one whole year of work. Then I think, “Wah, I still got so many days of sick leave not use, maybe can clear it before expire.” So I go and ask my boss, say I want to clear my sick leave for this holiday.
But guess what my boss reply? He say, “You not sick, how can use sick leave?” Wah lao, I already working until burnout liao, and the sick leave also is my entitlement what. Just because I never fall sick doesn’t mean I never need a break, right?
So I tell him, “But I want to clear before it disappear leh,” then he give me that HR talk — “Company policy, sick leave is only when you sick, cannot use like annual leave.” End up I LL (lan lan) got no choice, take no pay leave for my trip. Sick leave never use, just sit there and rot. Like that fair meh?
I even more buay song when come back, found out one of my colleague same thing, also want to go Japan use sick leave, but he just go see doctor, get MC, then go airport straight. Nobody say anything. So now must fake sick to enjoy your benefit ah?
Sometimes I really wonder, these kind of rule so rigid for what. Sick leave is part of my benefit, and if I never abuse it, should let me use flexibly mah. Now I be honest, kena penalise. People who act sick, end up enjoy more. Like that, honest people really eat grass sia.
In the end, I enjoy my trip lah, but heart still not shiok. Sick leave wasted, wallet also more light. Maybe next year I also play the system liao, doctor anyhow go, MC also can become travel pass. Welcome to working life in Singapore — where being too honest makes you the biggest carrot.
