A 52-year-old man has been arrested in Australia following an alleged sexual assault incident onboard a Scoot flight travelling from Singapore to Perth. The case has raised fresh concerns about passenger safety during long-haul and overnight flights, where travellers are often seated in close proximity for extended periods.
The accused, identified as Sudhir Kumar Chahuan, an Indian national, was formally charged on April 14 after the aircraft landed at Perth Airport. Authorities have brought multiple charges against him, including one count of engaging in sexual intercourse without consent and three counts of committing indecent acts without consent.
According to Australian authorities, the alleged incident occurred during the early hours of April 13 while the flight was en route from Singapore. The victim, who was seated beside the man, reportedly experienced non-consensual physical contact during the journey.
Passenger Alerted Crew Mid-Flight as Situation Escalated
During the flight, the woman sought assistance from cabin crew after the alleged acts took place. Airline staff responded by relocating her to a different seat to ensure her safety and comfort for the remainder of the journey. The crew also continued to monitor the accused individual until the plane landed.
The flight, identified as TR16 and operated by Scoot, departed Singapore at approximately 3am and arrived in Perth around 8am. The airline later confirmed that it was aware of the incident and had protocols in place to manage such situations onboard.
Upon arrival, officers from the Australian Federal Police were waiting at Perth Airport and escorted the man off the aircraft for questioning. He was subsequently taken into custody and formally charged.
Authorities Stress Zero Tolerance for In-Flight Misconduct
Law enforcement officials in Australia have reiterated their firm stance against any form of criminal behaviour on aircraft. Acting Superintendent Peter Brindal emphasised that passengers have the right to feel safe throughout their journey, particularly in confined environments such as aeroplane cabins.
He also encouraged victims of any inappropriate or unwanted contact to report incidents immediately to airline staff or authorities. Prompt reporting allows crew members and security personnel to respond quickly and prevent further harm.
Under Australian law, the charge of sexual intercourse without consent carries a maximum penalty of up to 12 years in prison. Additional charges related to indecent acts without consent may result in further jail time of up to seven years per offence, highlighting the serious legal consequences of such actions.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of aviation safety, passenger rights, and strict enforcement of laws to maintain order and security in international air travel.
