LANDLORD INSTALLED CAMERAS WITHOUT NOTIFYING TENANT, “IS THIS LEGAL”

Landlord installed multiple cameras in the living room without notifying me first as the tenant – is this legal?

For context I’m renting one room out of an entire flat where the owner occupies another room.

I went out of the room yesterday after hearing maintenance staff doing repairs in the house to discover two huge new cameras installed on the living room ceiling that are also directly facing my own room and the toilet area.

This took me aback since not only did the landlord not ask for consent first when the cameras are directly monitoring my activities inside the house and in the toilet area 24/7, but she installed the cameras without even bothering to give any kind of notice or heads-up in advance.

I just walk outside to abruptly find two huge cameras on the ceiling staring back. Feels incredibly violating and invasive with zero respect for her own tenant’s boundaries and privacy. The landlord was overbearing and rude since after I moved in but this takes the last straw.

The signed contract didn’t mention anything about installing surveillance cameras in the house so is this even legal in the first place? How do I communicate with her about this issue?

Netizens’ comments

  • She can do anything on her own house (except inside her rented room i guess), yes that’s the bitter truth. Advisable for you to move out, don’t waste your energy for this bad lord.
  • cameras eh, here’s my 1 month notice
  • The law also states that tenants have the right to quiet enjoyment. It should be in your tenancy agreement.
Activities that restrict the right to privacy, such as surveillance and censorship, can only be justified when they are prescribed by law, necessary to achieve a legitimate aim, and proportionate to the aim pursued.
See how landlord justifies lor. Make sure its in writing (or recording).
