MAFIA THAI MONK: POLICE FOUND FIRE ARMS AND ILLEGAL ITEMS IN TEMPLE

Authorities in Thailand have removed a Buddhist monk from the clergy after officials discovered illegal drugs and several firearms during a raid on his living quarters at a temple in the northeastern province of Maha Sarakham.

The operation was carried out after local residents lodged complaints with the Damrongtham public grievance centre, prompting provincial officials to investigate allegations of suspicious activities at the temple in Borabue district.

According to local authorities, villagers reported that a monk who had recently arrived from another province had been gathering with others inside the temple compound, where they were allegedly drinking alcohol, consuming drugs and possibly storing weapons.

The allegations raised concerns among residents, who later urged authorities to conduct an inspection of the monk’s hut.

OFFICIALS DISCOVER WEAPONS AND DRUG USE

During the search, officials surrounded the single-storey hut located within the temple grounds before entering to conduct an inspection.

Authorities described the condition of the hut as extremely messy and unsanitary, with rubbish scattered throughout the room. Large piles of waste reportedly produced a strong foul smell that spread across the surrounding area.

Inside the hut, officials found the monk, identified as 40-year-old Phra Suwan, who originally came from Kanchanaburi province.

A detailed search of the premises uncovered several weapons, including two .22-calibre firearms, three BB guns and 41 rounds of ammunition. All of the items were confiscated by authorities as part of the investigation.

During preliminary questioning, the monk admitted that he had taken two yaba tablets — a form of methamphetamine — about five days earlier.

Officials subsequently carried out a urine test, which confirmed the presence of narcotics in his system.

MONK FORMALLY DEFROCKED BEFORE POLICE INVESTIGATION

Following the discovery, authorities brought the monk before the temple’s abbot to carry out the formal process of defrocking, which removes a monk’s religious status.

After being stripped of his monastic robes, the former monk was taken to Borabue Police Station in Maha Sarakham province for further questioning and legal action.

Officials said investigations are ongoing and the seized weapons will be examined as part of the case.

The incident has drawn criticism from members of the local community, who said they had observed unusual behaviour from the monk for some time before deciding to report the matter to authorities.

RESIDENTS CALL FOR STRONGER OVERSIGHT

Villagers in the area have since called for stricter monitoring of monks staying in temples, especially those who arrive from other provinces.

Some residents expressed concern that incidents like this could damage public trust in Thailand’s Buddhist institutions, which play an important role in community life.

While such cases remain relatively rare, controversies involving members of the clergy have occasionally surfaced in Thailand, prompting discussions about oversight and accountability within religious communities.

Local authorities said they will continue working with temple leaders and community members to ensure that temples remain safe and respected places for worship and religious practice.
