A netizen shared how his maid is refusing to believe that she is being scammed and insists that her “lover” is going to send her millions of dollars.
Here is the story:
“Hey guys,
So the scam had not happened yet. But my helper is very insistent that her Caucasian lover is sending her millions worth of cash and jewelry and wants to pay $5000 to ‘retrieve’ it from customs.
I guess due to the nature of being a domestic helper, she is very unaware of scams and it is very difficult to explain to her given her grasp of English.
My attempt at convincing my helper that the scam had not happened yet was becoming increasingly difficult. She was very insistent that her Caucasian lover was sending her millions worth of cash and jewelry, and wanted to pay $5,000 in order to “retrieve” it from customs. It was clear that she was unaware of the scam and had no idea that she was being taken advantage of.
I knew that it was my responsibility to make her understand the situation, and protect her from any further harm. Unfortunately, it was not easy to explain the truth to her, given her limited English and lack of knowledge about scams. Despite my best efforts to explain that no such money or items existed, she was still convinced that the scheme was real.
It was not only heartbreaking to see my helper get taken advantage of, but it was also concerning to think that she was not the only one who had been scammed. We had heard of other similar cases involving domestic helpers, where scammers had used similar tactics of sending fake photos of jewelry and cash, and demanding money in order to “retrieve” them from customs.
We have tried explaining that no cash exist and the photos are all fake etc., But she is rather convinced that it’s true.
We’re thinking of bringing her to the police but I’m not sure if they’re of any help. Does the police have Indonesian speakers or resources available to provide counselling?”
