Malaysian Man Shocked After Rice And Bean Sprouts Meal Costs Nearly S$3.30

A man in Malaysia has sparked debate online after revealing that a simple meal consisting of white rice and bean sprouts cost him RM10.90, or about S$3.30, at a restaurant in Selangor.

The incident quickly went viral on social media after the customer, identified as Hamdzaini, shared his experience on Threads. Many netizens were stunned by the pricing, especially considering the meal contained only basic ingredients often associated with budget dining or weight-loss meals.

According to the man, he had visited an ordinary eatery and selected a modest lunch while trying to maintain his diet plan. However, he was left shocked after discovering the total bill only when he arrived at the cashier.

The pricing breakdown allegedly included RM2.80 for a plate of white rice, RM1.50 for half a bowl of rice, RM6.60 for a scoop of bean sprouts, and an additional 6 per cent sales and service tax.

The total eventually came up to RM10.90.

Customer Says Restaurant Did Not Display Prices

Speaking to local media outlet WeirdKaya, the man claimed the restaurant did not clearly display the prices of the dishes beforehand.

He explained that he usually pays between RM5 and RM6 for a similar meal elsewhere and never expected the cost to be almost double the usual amount.

The man reportedly said he was trying to eat lighter meals because he had already consumed protein earlier in the day as part of his slimming routine. Wanting something simple for lunch, he opted for rice and vegetables instead.

Unfortunately for him, the supposedly “healthy budget meal” turned into an unexpectedly expensive lunch.

Despite feeling unhappy with the pricing, he chose not to confront the restaurant staff as he was already hungry and simply wanted to eat before leaving.

He later joked online that he would still continue dieting because he had upcoming events to attend.

Social Media Users Debate Rising Food Prices

The viral post triggered heated discussions among Malaysian social media users, many of whom felt the bean sprout pricing was excessive.

Several commenters claimed that similar portions of bean sprouts at economy rice stalls would usually cost between RM1 and RM2. Others questioned whether the restaurant had engaged in unclear or misleading food pricing practices.

Some users even encouraged the customer to report the matter to consumer authorities, especially if food prices were not properly displayed before purchase.

The incident has also reignited broader conversations surrounding inflation, food costs, and dining transparency across Malaysia and Singapore. Rising operational expenses, including rental, utilities, and ingredient costs, have increasingly affected hawker stalls, cafés, and restaurants throughout the region.

Still, many online users argued that charging over RM6 for a single scoop of bean sprouts appeared difficult to justify at a standard casual eatery.

The story has since gained traction across multiple social media platforms, with netizens continuing to debate whether the pricing was fair or simply another example of rising living costs affecting everyday meals.
