A violent domestic dispute in Singapore has landed a 23-year-old man behind bars after he threatened to kill his own parents while armed with a cleaver and a golf club.
The accused, Terry Lee Zheng Chong, was sentenced to a total of two years, one month and four weeks’ jail after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including criminal intimidation and possession of offensive weapons.
The shocking incident, which unfolded inside a family home, has raised concerns about escalating domestic conflicts and the dangers of uncontrolled aggression.
VIOLENT OUTBURST OVER MONEY DISPUTE
According to court proceedings, the altercation began over a disagreement involving money between Lee and his father. The argument quickly escalated, prompting his father and stepmother to retreat into their bedroom and lock the door out of fear.
As tensions rose, Lee attempted to force his way into the room but failed. In a fit of rage, he retrieved a cleaver from the kitchen and began hacking at the bedroom door while issuing death threats.
The situation intensified when he later grabbed a golf club and continued striking the door, eventually creating a hole large enough for those inside to see him holding the weapon. Fearing for their lives, his stepmother contacted the police, according to Shin Min Daily News.
Authorities arrived shortly after and arrested Lee at the scene. The court heard that his actions could have resulted in far more serious consequences, given the clear intent and use of weapons.
DANGEROUS DRIVING INCIDENT ADDS TO CHARGES
Separately, Lee was also convicted over a traffic-related offence that further compounded his legal troubles. He had driven a vehicle without a valid licence along Jurong West, where he caused an accident at a traffic junction.
Investigations revealed that he failed to keep a proper lookout before making a turn, colliding with another vehicle that had the right of way. The victim sustained minor injuries and was given medical leave.
In an attempt to avoid responsibility, Lee initially lied to the police, claiming he had not been the driver. However, dashcam footage and further questioning exposed the falsehood, leading to an additional charge under the law.
The court imposed a S$2,500 fine and suspended his driving privileges for two years as part of the penalties.
DRUG USE AND THEFT OFFENCES FURTHER COMPLICATE CASE
Lee’s offences extended beyond the violent घरेलू incident and traffic violations. He was also found to have consumed methamphetamine, with a urine test confirming drug use at the time of his arrest.
Authorities discovered drug-related paraphernalia in his possession, including bottles, straws and glass pipes, suggesting ongoing substance abuse.
In another separate case, Lee was involved in a theft where he stole a gold chain from a member of the public. He was later apprehended and found carrying a foldable knife.
These additional offences contributed to the severity of his overall sentence, reflecting a pattern of unlawful behaviour.
COURT TAKES FIRM STANCE ON MULTIPLE OFFENCES
The court ultimately took a strict view of Lee’s actions, citing the combination of violence, dishonesty and repeated criminal conduct.
His threats against his own family, coupled with the use of weapons, were considered particularly serious. Prosecutors emphasised the potential for grave harm, noting that such incidents could easily escalate into fatal outcomes.
The case underscores the importance of addressing domestic disputes before they spiral out of control, as well as the broader legal consequences of engaging in reckless and criminal behaviour.
Lee’s sentencing sends a clear message that acts of violence, especially within the home, will be dealt with firmly under Singapore law.
