A viral video showing dangerous behaviour on a moving bus has resulted in jail sentences for a Malaysian couple, sparking widespread concern over passenger safety.
The case involved Arif Fahmi Abd Salam, a 36-year-old married bus driver, who was caught allowing a 21-year-old woman to sit on his lap while driving. The woman, identified as Nur Adila Najwa Ilham Ameerrullah, was also seen appearing to handle the steering wheel during the incident.
The act, recorded in an eight-second clip that quickly went viral, took place along the North-South Expressway near the Bemban Rest and Service Area. The footage triggered outrage online due to the serious danger posed to passengers on board.
DRIVER JAILED FOR RECKLESS AND DANGEROUS DRIVING
Following court proceedings, Arif Fahmi was sentenced to one year in jail after pleading guilty to reckless driving. He was also fined RM5,000 (approximately S$1,608) and disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for five years.
The court took a firm stance, noting that the driver had put 27 passengers at risk through his irresponsible actions. Prosecutors emphasised that public transport operators carry a high duty of care, and any breach of that responsibility must be treated seriously.
In addition to the viral clip, another dashcam video allegedly showed the bus making a dangerous lane change, further reinforcing the case against the driver. He has since been dismissed from his job at Sri Maju Group.
WOMAN ALSO JAILED, FACES ADDITIONAL OFFENCE
Nur Adila was sentenced to six months in jail and fined RM5,000 (S$1,608). She was also banned from holding a driving licence for five years.
During the same court proceedings, she faced an additional charge for using abusive and insulting language towards a 44-year-old female passenger. This incident reportedly occurred earlier during the journey.
While the penalty for that offence carries a smaller fine, it contributed to the overall seriousness of the case and reflected her conduct throughout the trip.
COURT REJECTS PLEAS FOR LENIENCY
Both individuals appealed for lighter sentences. Arif Fahmi cited the loss of his job and the impact the incident had on their lives, while Nur Adila explained that she had moved in hopes of building a better future.
However, prosecutors argued that their actions were unacceptable and endangered lives. The court agreed, stating that such reckless behaviour, especially in a public transport setting, could not be tolerated.
The case highlights the importance of safety standards and accountability, particularly for those responsible for transporting members of the public.
