A video emerged online showing a man being questioned by a couple of policemen while inside a taxi after allegedly refusing to pay.

The man was seen having the taxi fare explained by one of the police officers, who told him: “Listen, listen – you gave $20, the taxi fare is $23, you need to pay $3 more, correct? Then we will give you the receipt.”

The man in the taxi was mumbling something incoherent throughout the video, and we could only make out something about a receipt as we didn’t understand what he was saying.

Potential penalties

Persons found guilty of fare evasion face a composition fine of $200 for their first offence and $400 for their second offence – subsequent offenders will be prosecuted in court.

The fines will be on top of the original unpaid fare that will need to be restituted to the driver.
