Today my heart broke a little when my 10 year old boy asked me why is it that his friends’ parents always bring them to places like Japan and Australia for holiday while our family only goes to Malaysia.
Disclaimer first before anyone starts criticising us, my son wasn’t complaining. He was just genuinely curious why we haven’t considered places other than Malaysia for our holiday destinations. So I explained to him that Papa and Mama don’t earn a lot and although we want to bring him out to play, we also need to set aside some money as savings so there’s a limit to how much we can spend on holidays.
We don’t have enough in our budget to go to Japan and Australia, but next time we have saved up enough, we’ll bring him there. I thought he would be jealous of his friends but he just nodded and went into his room.
A while later he emerged from his room with his piggy bank and told me that he feels thankful that his dad and I work hard to provide for him. And that to show his appreciation, he wants to bring us out for my favourite sushi with his savings since he can’t afford to bring us to Japan.
Omg when he said that I swear my tears were brimming at my eyes and I just felt so grateful to be his mom.
Compared to some of the stories that I hear my friends share, I’m really very thankful that my son is such an understanding and sweet boy.
Here are what netizens think:
- My children prefer Malaysia to Australia or Japan. They rather go to the Pasar malam than the Australian markets.
- Worth all the riches in the world
- He will do big when he grows up
