A Singaporean man, Chen Cheng Quan, faced 3 charges in court, including driving without a valid driver’s license.

He had rented BlueSG cars 49 times over the period of three months, despite failing the basic theory test four times, according to Shin Min Daily News.

He was eventually caught by the police during a routine traffic police check.

Chen had reportedly said that he failed his basic theory test (BTT) because he couldn’t understand some of the English words in the test, but it doesn’t mean that he can’t drive.

He said that he knows how to drive, just that he was not good at passing the driving tests.

He also tried to take the test in Mandarin but failed that as well.

What happened?

Chen was driving his wife in a BlueSG car that he had rented, from Bukit Panjang to IKEA Tampines on 28 July last year.

He then left IKEA at about 3.30pm and was driving towards the expressway when a traffic police officer stopped him for a routine check, and that was when he was found to be driving without a license.

It was later revealed via investigations that he had rented cars from BlueSG a total of 49 times from 7 May to 28 July 2021.

Chen defended himself in court saying that he failed to pass his BTT due to language difficulties, and argued that it wasn’t an indication of his driving ability, saying that he could drive despite failing the tests.

How he rented the BlueSG cars

Chen had a friend who lent him his drivers’ license to rent a wedding car for his wedding, to which Chen kept a copy of it and used it to register for the rentals.
