MAN CHARGED IN COURT FOR DEFACING MOTHER MARY’S STATUE @ UPPER SERANGOON

A 37-year-old man was charged earlier today (20 Nov), for trespassing and defiling a place of worship with intent to insult a religion.

According to the court documents, the incident happened on the wee hours of 12 Nov 2020 at 12.30 am at a church located at Upper Serangoon.

The church was closed for renovation at the time of the incident. It was reported that the man has climbed over the fence and defaced the statue of mother mary that was with the premises of the church.

It was said that he used blue tack to stick marbles to the eyes of the mother mary statue. The police were alerted to the incident on the same day. After investigations, the police established the man’s identity and arrested him on 18 Nov 2020.

During his court hearing, he told the court that he did not do it intentionally. He said that he is just trying to beautify the statue and did not know that he was breaking the law.

For his offence of trespassing, he could be jailed for up to 3 months and fine $1,500. As for his offence of defiling a place of worship with intent to insult a religion he could be jailed for up to 5 years and fined.
