Going to jail soon, how do I save my job?

Going to jail soon for a petty crime, could be from 1 month to a year, not sure yet as I haven’t been sentenced. How do I save my job? Am open to taking sabbatical.
However, would like to keep this sentence as confidential as possible = employer and colleagues don’t know. Serious answers only please. 🙁

- The only serious answer should be to discuss with your boss. Only they can tell you how, if it’s possible.
- Sounds impossible.
- Drunk driving ah? Just take 2 weeks leave.
- Lol at open to taking sabbatical. As if you have a choice. Don’t be shy, tell us your ‘petty’ crime.
- You could say that something personal has cropped up, and you wish to take no pay leave for X amount of time.
Are you represented by a lawyer? At the sentencing hearing, you may be able to make an application to the Judge to defer the commencement of your sentence to settle your personal affairs.
Ie. The Judge pronounces your sentence so you know how long you will go to jail for, and then the Judge orders the sentence to start, for example, 3 weeks later. This way you can have some time to apply for leave from your employer.
In my view, I wouldn’t think employees have an obligation to explain what they would be doing in their own time, when putting in an application for leave.
Think about it from another perspective: an employee’s family member could have gotten really ill, and the employee may want to take no-pay leave to take care of the family member.
I think that the employee would be well within their rights to say that they are taking time off for “a personal matter”. - Yes, they can but employers will be more likely be willing to grant a sabbatical if they sympathize or understand their employee’s motivations. Saying “a personal matter” alone has a higher chance of rejection.
