Should I join back the company that laid me off?
Hi everybody, just for context, I was laid off last year Dec 2022 in a big tech firm. The worklife balance there was extremely great (100% WFH) and the pay was so-so (about 120k TC).
Unfortunately I got laid off (almost half the firm got cut), and started applying for roles and managed clinch a role in a hegde fund. Worklife balance is quite bad (have to travel to and fro from the office 7.30am wake up and by the time reach home is about 8pm) and the pay is slightly better than before (about 160k TC)
After working in this firm for slightly less than half a year, a new role was opened in my previous firm and my ex colleagues actually reached out to me if I was interested in the role. This new role has likely (around 150k TC) and great worklife balance. Now my dilemma is whether I should go back to my previous firm or not? What are your thoughts?
Edit: Seems like no one mentioned about this but one of my concerns is potentially getting laid off again if I go back. Current firm has 0% chance of getting laid off.

- If you want to go back to your previous firm, negotiate an increase from your current pay
- Just go back for 10k diff… for much better wlb. Your long term health will thank you
- If you didn’t burn any bridges when you left, why not? Just apply and see how it goes. Good luck!
- If it’s a good career move … take the job. Several European companies do this they call this initiative ‘Boomerang’ ie those who left for whatever reason are encouraged to return. The fact that you are allowed to return means you were a valued staff that was performing it’s just than company circumstances needed to take the step of taking some staff out.
- From the way you worded it, it seems like you already have the answer. I think just go for it
- 100% WFH with 120k TC and you claim that pay is so-so? How delusional are you? That is a great pay!
