A disturbing video making rounds on social media shows a man trembling uncontrollably just moments after inhaling what’s believed to be a powerful narcotic-laced vape, commonly referred to as the Piao Piao, Zombie vape, or Etomidate vape. The footage, which originated from a Thai TikToker, has sparked alarm and concern across Southeast Asia.
In the viral clip, the man takes a puff of the vape before suddenly convulsing, his body jerking in an unnatural and unsettling manner. Bystanders can be heard reacting in shock as he appears to lose all motor control, barely able to stay upright. The phrase “飘飘?一口直接飞” — loosely translated as “Piao Piao? One puff and you’re flying” — has now become synonymous with the dangers of this dangerous trend.
Etomidate is a powerful sedative typically used in hospitals to induce anaesthesia. When abused recreationally, especially through vapes, it can cause intense hallucinations, disorientation, muscle spasms, and in some cases, life-threatening side effects. Authorities in Thailand and neighbouring countries have issued warnings about the growing circulation of these illegal vapes, often sold online or in underground markets.
Social Media Reactions Highlight Growing Concern
Comments on the viral post reflect a mix of mockery and concern. One user sarcastically wrote, “One puff straight to space,” while another compared the experience to jumping into a trance. Others called out the recklessness of users who risk their lives for a momentary high, labelling the behaviour “trash” and “self-destructive”.
Authorities Struggle to Keep Up With Vape Abuse
As zombie vapes gain popularity, law enforcement across the region, including in Singapore, face increasing pressure to clamp down on their distribution. These vapes are often unlabelled, unregulated, and extremely dangerous, especially for teenagers who may be unaware of the risks. In Singapore, possession or use of controlled drugs like Etomidate can result in severe penalties, including jail time and caning.
Parents and educators are being urged to look out for signs of unusual vape use and to educate youths on the life-altering consequences of experimenting with illicit substances.
