Here is the story:

I am a victim and I would not want anyone to be part of it as well. report to the police if he/she continues to harass you!

It all started when I was browsing through Locanto, an online classifieds website, for some job offers. I came across an advert posted by a girl who was looking for someone to accompany her to parties and events. She promised to pay good money for the service, and I was intrigued. I decided to send her an email, and to my surprise, she replied almost immediately.

We exchanged a few emails and I was quite taken by her. She seemed really nice and sincere. I asked her if we could meet up so that we could discuss the details of the job in person. She agreed to meet me at a cafe near my place the following day.

On the day of the meeting, I arrived at the cafe early but she was nowhere to be seen. I waited for about an hour and then I decided to leave. As I was leaving, I received a call from a strange number. The man on the other end of the line said that he was the girl’s friend, and that she had asked him to call me. He said that she was stuck in a meeting and couldn’t make it to the cafe. He asked me to go to a nearby convenience store, where I would find a card with instructions.

I followed his instructions and went to the store, where I saw a card with my name on it. I opened it and found a message asking me to buy five prepaid cards for the girl. I was a bit wary, but I thought this was just a way of her showing her appreciation for my effort. I bought the cards and sent them to her.

The next day, I received a call from the same guy. He said that the girl had asked him to call me to thank me for the cards. He asked me for a copy of my NRIC as well. I thought this was a bit strange, but I obliged anyway.

A few days later, the same guy called me again and asked for more cards. I told him that I had already sent the girl the cards she had asked for, and that I was not willing to buy any more. He threatened me and said that if I didn’t comply, he would come to my house and threaten my family.

At that point, I realized that I had been scammed. I was very angry and frustrated with myself for being so naive. I had fallen for the scammer’s ploy of using the girl as a way to gain my trust and get me to send them money. I vowed to never be so gullible again.

I would like to advise everyone to be careful when dealing with strangers online. Don’t be taken in by their seemingly friendly behaviour. Don’t give out too much personal information, such as your NRIC, and definitely don’t buy prepaid cards as a way of showing your appreciation. If you come across someone who is trying to scam you, report them to the police immediately.

I have learned the hard way that there are people out there who are willing to take advantage of unsuspecting people. Be aware and stay safe.
