A Facebook user recently shared a post on his shocking experience on what a mother told her young daughter on the train. She even stated that Indians and Malays are stupid.
Here is the full post.
Overheard this on MRT just now. Between a mother and her daughter (about 4 or 5 years old)
translated from Chinese
Girl: mummy, why are there so many chinese in singapore. Malay and indian so few?
Mother: Because malay and indian they are more stupid, thats why not as many as Chinese. You are lucky you born a Chinese
Omg. I was shocked to hear that. To think this kind of racist, totally wrong, ridiculous attitude still exists today. The mother looked like in her thirties.
And we are passing this all to our younger generation. My fear is that what the children learn in schools, about racial equality and tolerance, may still get drowned out by this kind of toxic stuff their own parents or grandparents are feeding them. And its not even a serious discussion. It was just a random, totally innocent question from a child trying to make sense of her world.
Plain wrong. I hope that mother is the exception. Not the norm.
Dear Singaporeans, pls dont let your own prejudices, however right or wrong you may feel, stand in the way of your children learning the correct values. Let them learn and explore their world unhindered, in an unprejudiced manner. Only then can they fulfil their potential.
Racism and intolerance has no place in our society. It is the very thing that can destroy our children’s future.
Peace~~
