39-year-old Maserati driver Lee Cheng Yan, dragged a police officer who was trapped in his car door along the road while trying to escape, back in 2017.
At the time, he was jailed, fined and banned from driving for life.
However, Lee reoffended in 2022 and drove while banned, and once again tried to evade the police – he ended up being sentenced to an extra 21 months and 16 weeks in jail, as well as another lifetime driving ban.
On 18 January, Lee asked the High Court to return his Maserati, saying that he wanted to sell it and use the money to provide for his two daughters, according to Channel NewsAsia.
He also asked for his jail term to be shortened by running his sentences concurrently.
CNA reported that on 25 January, Lee’s sister also made a case in court for the Maserati to be returned, claiming that the car belonged to their parents and the money from selling it would be used to repay them for the loans that Lee took from them.
She said that she and their mother have been supporting Lee’s 4-year-old twin daughters in Japan, and that they have another 42-year-old intellectually disabled brother who is unable to take care of himself.
She also added that their 76-year-old father had taken a loan from his life insurance and is unable to repay the loan, and has been making payments for the interest to the insurance company.
She added that their mother also pawned her jewellery to loan Lee a huge sum of money, and that they have been paying for the expenses of Lee’s children.
She also further added that Lee had pledged the money from selling the Maserati to her parents, making their parents the “de facto owners of the vehicle”.
The forfeiture hearing has since been adjourned to 27 February.
