Masked Arsonists Torch Johor Bahru Restaurant Hours Before Grand Opening, Causing Over S$63,000 in Damage
A newly renovated restaurant in Johor Bahru was set on fire by masked arsonists just hours before it was due to welcome its first customers, leaving behind extensive damage and forcing its highly anticipated opening to be postponed.
The shocking incident took place in the early hours of June 19 at a nasi kandar restaurant in Bandar Dato’ Onn, with police now searching for those responsible.
According to Malaysian media reports, the restaurant was scheduled to officially open on June 20 and had planned promotional giveaways, including free food for customers. Instead, the owners were left dealing with the aftermath of a suspected arson attack that caused significant financial losses.
CCTV Captures Attack in Progress
Security camera footage circulating on social media captured the dramatic attack at around 3.32am.
The video shows two masked individuals wearing motorcycle helmets entering the restaurant while carrying what appeared to be machetes and a large container believed to contain fuel.
The pair allegedly splashed fuel throughout the premises before throwing red paint around the restaurant. Moments later, they ignited the fuel, triggering a blaze that rapidly spread across the interior.
Ironically, the flames also engulfed the attackers’ own feet, forcing them to flee as thick smoke quickly filled the restaurant.
The CCTV footage has since gone viral online, with many expressing shock at the brazenness of the attack.
Fire Extinguished Before Firefighters Arrived
The Johor Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at approximately 3.43am.
However, by the time firefighters reached the scene, the blaze had already been extinguished using eight fire extinguishers by people at the location.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Authorities estimated that the fire caused around RM200,000 in damage, equivalent to approximately S$63,100, affecting the restaurant just one day before it was due to begin operations.
Investigators have not yet revealed a motive for the attack, and it remains unclear why the business was targeted.
Police Continue Investigations
Police have launched an investigation and are working to identify and locate the masked suspects seen in the CCTV footage.
The incident has raised concerns among local business owners, particularly as the restaurant had invested heavily in preparations for its opening and promotional activities.
Investigators are expected to examine the security footage, forensic evidence collected from the scene and any potential witnesses as they continue efforts to determine who carried out the attack and whether it was linked to any previous disputes or criminal activities.
Authorities have yet to announce any arrests, and investigations remain ongoing.
