A major traffic accident involving multiple heavy vehicles brought traffic on Malaysia’s North-South Expressway to a standstill on the morning of Jun. 23.
The crash occurred on the southbound carriageway between Sedenak and Kulai in Johor and involved at least six vehicles, including four lorries and two cars.
Videos circulating on social media showed one of the lorries engulfed in flames while debris and cargo were scattered across the highway.
Lorry Catches Fire, Highway Completely Blocked
According to footage shared online, one of the lorries overturned and ended up lying across two lanes, completely blocking traffic.
Concrete piles or construction materials believed to have been transported by one of the lorries were seen strewn across the road.
Several vehicles also appeared to have crashed into the central divider, leaving significant damage across the accident scene.
The severity of the crash caused both northbound and southbound traffic to be temporarily shut down.
Reports Claim Two People May Have Died
Social media users claimed the accident may have resulted in two fatalities.
However, authorities had not officially confirmed the number of casualties at the time of reporting.
Motorists travelling along the route were advised to expect significant delays.
Traffic Congestion Stretches For Kilometres
Reports indicated that traffic congestion had already built up to around:
- 7km on the southbound carriageway
- 4km on the northbound carriageway
Authorities are expected to release further information once rescue operations and investigations are completed.
Motorists heading towards Johor Bahru were advised to seek alternative routes if possible.
