Malaysia’s Tourism, Art and Culture Minister Nancy Shukri said on 4 June that since their borders reopened, Malaysia has received more than 1 million tourists.
A large proportion of the tourists were from Singapore, with Shukri adding that Malaysia is also expecting many visitors from countries such as Japan, Korea and Iran.
The 1 million visitors are half of Malaysia’s target of 2 million tourists this year, and it has only been a little over 2 months since they reopened their borders.
She added that in the last 2 months alone, 600,000 of the 1 million tourists were from Singapore.
She also said that there are tourists from other countries, but they cannot get accurate numbers because they are still waiting for feedback from the respective parties.
She underlined that Malaysia has achieved more than half of what they have targeted, and reasoned that people are keen to visit Malaysia due to their eased Covid rules where there are no mandatory quarantines, screening tests and insurance.
However, she lamented the shortage of workers in Malaysia’s tourism industry.
