Motorcyclist, 36, Dies After Yishun Accident Despite Rescue Efforts By Passers-By And Off-Duty Responders

A 36-year-old motorcyclist has died following a traffic accident in Yishun, despite the determined efforts of passers-by and off-duty emergency responders who rushed to provide life-saving assistance before paramedics arrived.

The incident occurred on the morning of June 3 along Yishun Avenue 1 towards Mandai Avenue. According to police, the accident involved a motorcycle that is believed to have self-skidded.

Among those who stopped to help was Syariz Affandi, who was on his way to the gym with a friend when they spotted the aftermath of the crash.

Speaking about the incident on social media, Syariz said the scene appeared serious, with visible injuries prompting his friend, a former firefighter, to immediately ask him to turn back so they could render assistance.

Upon arriving at the scene, they found several members of the public already helping the injured rider.

Passers-By And Off-Duty Responders Spring Into Action

According to Syariz, the motorcyclist was lying near a bus stop kerb when emergency aid efforts were already underway.

A member of the public had quickly retrieved a nearby Automated External Defibrillator (AED), while others were assisting with crowd management and calling for emergency services.

Syariz’s friend immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the unconscious rider. An off-duty Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officer was also present and worked together with him to continue resuscitation efforts.

The pair reportedly took turns administering CPR while coordinating closely with each other.

Adding to the remarkable response, Syariz revealed that his friend’s sister, who is also an off-duty firefighter and happened to be passing by, stopped to assist in the emergency.

The combined efforts of the off-duty responders and members of the public continued for approximately 20 to 25 minutes while awaiting the arrival of paramedics.

Community Praised For Quick Response

Emergency medical personnel later arrived and conveyed the rider unconscious to hospital.

Despite the extensive efforts to save him, the 36-year-old motorcyclist later succumbed to his injuries.

Police investigations into the accident are ongoing.

Reflecting on the incident, Syariz said he found it difficult to focus for the remainder of the day after witnessing the ordeal.

He praised those who stepped forward to help, describing them as the true heroes of the day.

The incident has also highlighted the importance of public first-aid knowledge and the accessibility of AED devices, with quick-thinking members of the public playing a critical role during the emergency.
