Dr Norlizan Mohd Noor, the director-general of Malaysia’s Department of Veterinary Services, said on 4 June that the chicken supply shortage in Malaysia is expected to be resolved in a month.
He said that inter-agency engagement sessions are held with industry players to find out the issues affecting supply.
Speaking to the media after an event, he said that they are committed to increasing production and are in the recovery process.
Dr Norlizan cited several factors such as disease, climate change, lack of workers and an unscheduled chicken vaccination process as the factors for the chicken shortage.
He also mentioned the use of open cages for the chickens, which exposes the fowl to odour and fly pollution, with almost 80% of the country’s chicken breeders using open cages.
The secretary-general of Malaysia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry Haslina Abdul Hamid also said that the situation is gradually improving.Â
She said that the chicken shortage is temporary and that the government is trying to ensure there isn’t a shortage of chickens.
