M’SIAN COUPLE TRIED TO MAKE QUICK MONEY, SMUGGLE 12,200 VAPES CAUGHT AT WOODLANDS CHECKPOINT

Malaysian Pair Arrested At Woodlands Checkpoint After Massive K-Pod Vape Smuggling Attempt

A 26-year-old Malaysian man and a 24-year-old Malaysian woman were arrested after authorities uncovered more than 12,200 illegal vaporiser products and components hidden inside a car entering Singapore through Woodlands Checkpoint.

The seizure, announced by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on May 19, is reportedly the largest haul of etomidate vaporiser pods illegally imported into Singapore so far.

The pair were travelling in a Malaysia-registered vehicle on May 6 when ICA officers selected the car for enhanced screening checks. The male suspect was driving while the female suspect was seated in the passenger seat.

During the inspection, officers discovered several white plastic bags concealed inside the vehicle’s spare tyre compartment. Further checks allegedly uncovered thousands of vaporisers, vape components and K-pods hidden within the vehicle.

Authorities stated that over 12,200 vaporisers and related components were seized during the operation.

The products reportedly included etomidate vaporiser pods, commonly referred to as “K-pods” on the black market. Etomidate is a powerful anaesthetic drug typically used in medical settings and has become increasingly linked to illegal vape abuse cases in parts of Asia.

Singapore authorities have been intensifying enforcement against illegal vape imports amid growing concerns over dangerous modified vaporiser products containing controlled or psychoactive substances.

The case has since been referred to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) for further investigations.

According to reports, the pair were charged in court on May 8 under the Tobacco and Vaporisers Control Act 1993. Authorities said this marks the first importation case prosecuted under the updated legislation involving etomidate vaporiser pods.

Singapore Maintains Tough Anti-Vape Enforcement

Singapore continues to enforce some of the strictest anti-vaping laws in the region. The importation, distribution, sale and possession of vaporisers remain prohibited under local law.

In recent years, authorities have stepped up border enforcement efforts at checkpoints including Woodlands and Tuas due to rising attempts to smuggle vape products from neighbouring Malaysia into Singapore.

The discovery of such a large quantity of K-pods is likely to further increase concerns over organised smuggling syndicates attempting to exploit cross-border traffic routes.

The incident also highlights the growing regional issue surrounding synthetic or drug-laced vape products, which authorities say pose serious health and public safety risks, especially among younger users.

Investigations into the smuggling attempt are ongoing.
