A 22-year-old food delivery rider in Malaysia has been sentenced to four months in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting his pregnant wife in a disturbing incident that took place in Melaka.
The ruling was delivered by the Ayer Keroh Magistrate’s Court, where the accused faced two separate charges of causing physical harm. The court ordered that both sentences run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of four months’ imprisonment starting from the date of his arrest on March 19.
According to court proceedings, the man admitted to physically attacking his 20-year-old wife, who was pregnant at the time. The assault involved punching the back of her head, slapping her face, and pushing her until she fell, raising serious concerns about domestic violence and the safety of vulnerable victims.
CCTV Footage Reveals Violent Incident
The offences took place at a karaoke centre located within the Kota Syahbandar Business Complex in Melaka Tengah during the early hours of March 15. The situation came to light after the victim’s mother reviewed CCTV footage from the premises.
The footage reportedly showed the accused repeatedly assaulting the victim, including hitting, slapping, and pulling her hair. The severity of the incident prompted immediate concern for the victim’s safety, particularly given her pregnancy.
She was later found at Melaka Hospital’s red zone before being brought home. However, the situation escalated when she was subsequently reported missing. Signs of forced entry at the back door of her residence heightened fears for her wellbeing, especially as her young children were believed to be with the accused at the time.
Court Emphasises Deterrence in Sentencing
The prosecution urged the court to impose a firm sentence, highlighting the seriousness of the offence and the added vulnerability of the victim due to her condition. Malaysian law provides for imprisonment, fines, or both for such offences, particularly when harm is inflicted on a spouse.
In mitigation, the accused appealed for leniency, citing personal circumstances, including his mother’s poor health following a stroke. However, the court ultimately prioritised the severity of the assault and the need to send a strong message against domestic violence.
This case has once again drawn attention to the importance of protecting victims of abuse, particularly those who are pregnant, and underscores the legal consequences faced by perpetrators. Authorities continue to stress the need for vigilance and intervention in cases of domestic violence to prevent further harm.
