A Malaysian man has apologised after drawing criticism online for incorrectly claiming that Singapore lacks halal fast-food options and alleging that McDonald’s outlets in the Republic serve pork.
The remarks, which were originally shared in a TikTok video before being deleted, resurfaced after being reposted by the Complaint Singapore Facebook page on July 14. The clip quickly sparked debate among netizens, many of whom pointed out that the statements were factually incorrect.
The man had been praising Malaysia and describing it as one of the best countries in the world, particularly when it comes to food. He argued that Malaysians enjoy greater convenience because halal food is widely available across the country.
During the video, he claimed that travellers visiting other nations often struggle to find suitable halal dining options. He specifically mentioned Singapore, suggesting that Muslims would have difficulty eating at fast-food outlets here because they were supposedly not halal-certified.
Claims About Singapore’s Fast Food Options Spark Backlash
The man further alleged that even McDonald’s restaurants in Singapore served pork products, using this as an example to support his argument that Malaysia offered a superior food environment for Muslim consumers.
He also compared Malaysia with destinations such as China, Japan and South Korea, saying Malaysia stood out for its food diversity and accessibility. According to him, visitors from various backgrounds could easily find cuisine suited to their preferences in the country.
Beyond food, he praised Malaysia’s payment ecosystem, highlighting the widespread acceptance of cash, credit cards, QR code payments and Touch ‘n Go transactions.
However, many social media users quickly challenged his claims about Singapore. Several commenters questioned whether he had ever visited the country, noting that halal-certified eateries are widely available across the island.
Others pointed out that Singapore is home to numerous halal-certified restaurants, hawker stalls and international fast-food chains, making it relatively easy for Muslim diners to find suitable meal options.
Man Admits He Did Not Verify Information Before Speaking
As criticism mounted, some netizens noted that the video had previously gone viral and that the man had already issued an apology.
Screenshots of his apology later circulated online, showing him acknowledging that his comments were inaccurate. He admitted that he should have conducted proper research before making statements about Singapore’s food scene.
His apology was generally welcomed by commenters, although many stressed the importance of verifying facts before sharing them publicly, especially when discussing religious dietary requirements.
Singapore’s halal certification system is overseen by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS), which certifies food establishments that meet strict halal standards.
McDonald’s Singapore Is Halal-Certified
Contrary to the claims made in the video, all McDonald’s outlets in Singapore are halal-certified by MUIS. This certification ensures that food preparation processes, ingredients and sourcing comply with halal requirements.
McDonald’s is also not the only major fast-food chain carrying halal certification in Singapore. Various international brands operating in the country have similarly obtained halal accreditation, providing Muslim consumers with a broad range of dining choices.
The incident has since become another example of how misinformation can spread rapidly online, with many users emphasising the need to verify facts before making public comparisons between countries.
