Malaysian Man Arrested for Attempting to Smuggle Drugs at Woodlands Checkpoint

A 30-year-old Malaysian man was arrested on June 14, 2025, for attempting to smuggle a significant quantity of drugs, including approximately 1,402 grams of heroin, through the Woodlands Checkpoint. The arrest was made by officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) during routine checks on a Malaysian-registered vehicle.

Discovery of the Drugs

Upon directing the vehicle for enhanced inspections, ICA officers discovered a bundle believed to contain controlled substances hidden behind the glove compartment of the car. Following this initial find, officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) were alerted, and further inspection revealed two additional bundles in the same location.

In total, the authorities seized:

  • 1,402 grams of heroin
  • 495 grams of cannabis
  • 115 grams of “Ice” (methamphetamine)

The estimated street value of the drugs is over S$173,000, which has the potential to supply approximately 800 addicts for a week.

Legal Consequences

The smuggling of such a large quantity of drugs carries severe penalties under Singaporean law. Individuals found importing or exporting more than 15 grams of diamorphine (pure heroin) may face the death penalty. The ICA and CNB have reiterated their commitment to preventing drug smuggling across the borders and will continue to conduct thorough security checks at checkpoints to deter such illegal activities.

Ongoing Investigations

Investigations into the case are currently ongoing, and the authorities are working to gather more information regarding the smuggling operation and any potential accomplices involved.

This incident serves as a reminder of the stringent measures in place to combat drug trafficking in Singapore and the serious consequences faced by those who attempt to engage in such illegal activities. The ICA and CNB continue to collaborate closely to ensure the safety and security of the nation’s borders.
