A man in Malaysia was left disgusted after discovering a cockroach at the bottom of his iced watermelon juice — but only after finishing the entire drink.
The incident reportedly occurred at a popular mamak stall and was shared on TikTok by user @syzzl5. In the short video, the man is seen holding a plastic bag containing what was once his drink. As he lifts it from a red bucket, a small cockroach is clearly visible lying at the bottom. Shaking his head in disbelief, he tosses the bag back into the bucket, visibly annoyed.
Vendor Replaces Drink for Free After Shocking Discovery
In the video caption, the man wrote: “I was so annoyed when I hung out at the mamak and there was a cockroach in my drink!” Netizens flooded the comment section, with reactions ranging from sympathy to humour.
According to his follow-up comments, the customer informed the staff about the bug-tainted beverage. Fortunately, the stall’s staff responded appropriately by offering a new drink free of charge and waiving the bill for the original contaminated one.
However, the ordeal didn’t end there. The man said he experienced mild discomfort shortly after consumption.
“There’s a bit of pain, maybe because the poison wasn’t too strong,” he commented. “I’m also feeling a bit dizzy.”
Netizens React: ‘Free Protein’ or Food Safety Breach?
The TikTok post quickly gained traction, with comments ranging from concern to cheeky remarks. One user joked that the cockroach added “free protein” to the drink, while another asked: “What did it taste like?”
Others suggested he might need a toilet run soon, while some took the matter more seriously, warning about the dangers of food hygiene lapses and calling for better cleanliness at food stalls.
Food Safety Concerns on the Rise
This isn’t the first time food hygiene at Malaysian roadside stalls has come under scrutiny. Similar cases of insects or foreign objects in food and drinks have previously surfaced on social media, sparking concerns about safety regulations.
In Singapore, under NEA regulations, food vendors face strict penalties for such lapses, including fines and licence suspensions. In Malaysia, enforcement often depends on local councils and public complaints.
While the man recovered with no serious side effects, the unsettling incident serves as a reminder for diners and food vendors alike to stay vigilant about hygiene — because no one wants to end their drink with an unexpected crunch.
