My BTO Not Even Build Yet, Girlfriend Already Planning Breakup—Walao 💀

Need to vent here because I am genuinely lost, broke, and sitting in my room questioning all my life decisions right now.

My (29M) girlfriend (27F) of 4 years and I successfully scored a BTO queue number back in 2024 for a 4-room flexi unit in a pretty decent location. Key collection is projected to be around 2028 or 2029, so literally right now, the plot of land is probably just a pile of dirt and concrete pillars.

Fast forward to last night. We were having a chill dinner at a cafe, talking about future plans. Out of nowhere, she takes a slow sip of her ice matcha latte, looks me straight in the eye, and says:

“Babe, if we break up before key collection, how will we split the downpayment and HDB cancellation fee?”

I froze. I thought she was joking or asking hypothetically because of some random TikTok or Mothership article she read. So I laughed and said, “Haha why ask like that? We are fine what.”

She didn’t laugh back. She just gave me this super cold, deadpan look and said, “No lah, just thinking ahead. People change, 4 years is very long to wait for a flat. I just want to know our options so we don’t get messy if things don’t work out.”

Walao eh?! The foundation of the building haven’t even lay properly, and she is already drafting the exit strategy?!

I tried probing further, asking if she’s unhappy with us or if there’s someone else. She kept giving me passive-aggressive non-answers like “I’m just being realistic,” “Singapore real estate is very tricky,” and “Why are you so emotional over a practical question?”

Bro, how to not be emotional? You don’t ask your partner how to split the funeral costs while you’re both happily planning a vacation! It feels like she already has one foot out the door and is just waiting for the right timing (or maybe a better match) before hitting the red button.

Now I’m sitting here stressing out. If we cancel the BTO now:

  1. We forfeit the $2,000 option fee + downpayment.
  2. We get hit with the 1-year waiting period penalty where we cannot apply for any new HDB/EC.
  3. I become a single 30-year-old guy who lost his queue number, lost his girlfriend, and has to start from square one.

Is she soft-launching a breakup, or am I overreacting and she’s really just a hyper-practical Singaporean girl? Anyone experienced this kind of “BTO contingency planning” before? Sibei stressed sia.
