
An NUS dental student was sentenced to 12 days of a detention order after he strangled and thumbed the eye of his ex-girlfriend over a breakup.
The man pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to others. He was given short detention for his crime which means that he will not have any criminal record upon his released.
The pair have been dating for two years before the victim decided to break up with the man. On the day of the incident, the man entered the victim’s house with an access card that she gave him earlier. He told her that he wanted to have a chat with her before the breakup.
While the pair was in the room, the man gave the victim a rose and begged her for forgiveness. When the victim rejected his request, the man then banged his head against the wall and remain silent for a moment.
After they began to talk again, the man strangled the victim on her neck. The victim screamed and struggled before the man released her. He then pressed his thumb on the victim’s left eye until she was bleeding.
The man apologised to the victim before climbing out of the room through the window. The victim’s mother was alerted and came to the room to check. After seeing what happened to the victim, she questioned the victim who hit her.
Upon hearing the conversation from the outside, the man decides to return and apologies to the victim’s parents. However, he was pinned to the ground by the victim’s stepfather while the victim’s mother called the police.
The victim suffered from blurry vision and conjunctival infection to her eye for 5 months. She also suffers from insomnia after countless of sleepless nights after what had happened.
During his hearing, The judge said that the man is not suitable for probation, however, he has no history of criminality and therefore community-based sentence is a possible outcome.
He was later sentenced to 12 days short detention order with 80 hours of community service and a day reporting order for 5 months.
