The People’s Action Party (PAP) have said that they have conducted an investigation on allegations against a candidate which they have initially fielded for their Jurong GRC team, Ivan Lim.
Two allegations were investigated and they were with regards to:
- Lim’s alleged involvement in Brazilian commercial deals of Keppel Offshore and Marine
- His alleged behaviour in his interactions with other people
Brazilian Project with Keppel
Lim had responded to social media comments about him which were accusing him of allegedly being involved in a bribery case in Brazil and he claimed that the statements were ‘completely baseless and untrue’.
He was the general manager at Keppel Offshore & Marine at the time of the incidents.
PAP investigated into the matter and found out that Lim was telling the truth and the allegations were indeed ‘completely baseless and untrue’.
PAP investigations also revealed that the project which Lim oversaw was not one of the projects involved in the bribery cases as it was delivered to a company in the Netherlands.
He was also not involved in the negotiation of the commercial deals as his role in the project was just to oversee the execution of it.
On his behaviour
A spokesperson of the PAP had acknowledged that they have received feedback from the public on Lim’s behaviour when interacting with people and these feedback that they have received were both positive and negative.
The spokesperson then added that such feedback varies and is subjective but the clear cut thing is that Lim’s integrity and honesty are genuine as well as his heart to serve the community.
Even though he ultimately withdrew from the GE in 2020, Lim still continued to serve the community in Jurong as a volunteer.
On candidate’s suitability
PAP also added that how a candidate interacts with others is relevant when it comes to their suitability assessment.
The process of assessing a candidate’s suitability will continue to change for the better especially as the public will scrutinise the candidates.
PAP also added that it will make sure that candidates are assessed and considered fairly, so that good and committed candidates from all walks of life can come out and to represent the Singaporean masses.
