The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Singapore (MFA), has issued a statement in response to media queries with regards to appeals from Malaysian leaders about the case of a drug trafficker who was sentenced to death.
The statement reads
‘Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan have replied to their Malaysian counterparts to convey that Nagaenthran A/L K Dharmalingam has been accorded full due process under the law.’
Written appeals for leniency
Malaysian PM Ismail Sabri Yaakob had previously written to PM Lee with regards to asking the Singapore government to grant Nagaenthran a stay of execution and also a fresh application for presidential clemency.
The Malaysian PM added that this was on humanitarian grounds and not for disrupting the process of law in Singapore.
Foreign Minister of Malaysia, Saifuddin Abdullah, had also wrote to Dr Vivian Balakrishnan seeking for discretion for presidential clemency to be granted in this case.
Tested positive
Nageanthran, who was initially scheduled to the gallows on 10 Nov 2021, saw his execution postponed as he had tested positive for Covid-19.
