Singaporean activist Gilbert Goh shared how he chanced upon a poor elderly man whom he saw eating leftover food from a rubbish bin during a charity distribution at Indus Road.
Here is what he said
Sad to see this elderly eating leftovers from our charity bento meals discarded at a dustbin during today’s meals distribution at Indus Road.
We must have missed him during our charity distribution today.
Passed him $10 so he can go and buy some decent food for himself.
There are still poor elderly folks eating off the dustbin with discarded food daily and it’s sad to still see this happening in our ultra-wealthy country.
We estimated that an average of 100 needy Singaporeans will eat leftover food daily either discarded at hawker center collection point or in the dustbin.
Food cost has gone beyond the affordability of many elderly folks living in poverty and the poorest will eat only one meal a day or off the dustbin on a regular basis.
Do something good for Singapore – a charity movement to alleviate the hardships of displaced elderly Singaporeans.
