At the time of writing, 78 people have been confirmed dead and over 4,000 are injured from the blast.

The cause of the blast could be due to highly explosive materials being stored in a warehouse there since 2014, with more than 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored in an unsafe manner.

The president of Beirut, Michel Aoun, has pledged emergency funds and declared a three-day mourning period.

The BBC have reported that hospitals in Beirut are overwhelmed at the moment.

People are advised to stay indoors and wear masks because of the “toxic gases released in the explosion”, athough many homes are lacking windows right now.

The mayor of Beirut likened the damage to the Hiroshima atomic bombings from World War 2 and vowed to hold those accountable for the blast.
