Will not disclose the name of this company publicly, only that they are newly established in sg, not local and they’re an education center offering only online classes.
Was in a HR managerial role there, but was made to teach, translate and work OT without additional pay. I’ve zero experience as a teacher but they dropped me into a class without notice after working hours and I had to attend as it was a requirement to answer my phone after work hours.
As such, I didn’t have time to even eat. I was not notified of the syllabus and requirements to teach. There was no structure at work, salary fraud is apparently the norm.
They would attempt to hire people and promise 5-8k, but when signing the contract, you’ll realize that the basic reflects less than 2k because during a 3 month probation, they will deduct 20% of your pay. I was made to do the same and lie to candidates, which I did not, hence many candidates were unwilling to join.
The boss is Chinese, uncouth and lacks integrity. I was also made to do his assignments and personal work during office hours.
He studies in a local institution as a Masters student. All his assignments were outsourced as he doesn’t speak nor understand English. He is fond of insulting people and cursing them to just ‘go die, go to hell, you useless idiot’.
Despite studying business management, his KPI and expectations were terrible, and he expects to hire experienced candidates with a 1k-2k salary, claiming that his Chinese workers get the same, and that many were begging him for jobs in China.
He was unwilling to pay tuition teachers at the basic market rate, and would only offer less than 50 for a 2hr class for an experienced teacher.
At that moment, I realized that one day such behavior would be directed at me, hence I refuted his statements, saying that he shouldn’t have insulted anyone, and he immediately turned on me with claims that I am new and that I am a graduate that is full of herself and expects the best pay and minimal workload.
He said that Singaporeans are incapable, and he would bring over his Chinese workers, and claimed that fresh grads and graduates are incompetent, lazy and full of talk.
He then said that Singaporeans are like frogs in a well that know nothing apart from getting a salary, on the other hand, China is a big world and he has seen it all.
He even claimed that he has a psychology background, and that he could read anyone, but he failed to understand the statistics I gave him on benchmarking and market trends, claiming that he only wants to know 1 figure.
For an education center that just newly landed in Singapore, is this really the standard we are supposed to endure and accept?
I am honestly glad that I quit the job, as they were fraudulent and refused to be held accountable for their promises. I last heard from my excolleague that they claimed that I was fired as I was unable to speak in Mandarin. And well, I am Chinese, and it’s the first time I’ve ever heard of that.
