A Chinese national was detained at Bangkok’s main airport after allegedly stealing cash from fellow passengers during a regional flight, highlighting growing concerns over in-flight security and travel safety.
The incident unfolded on board Thai Airways flight TG571, which was travelling from Laos to Bangkok. According to reports, three passengers — including a 45-year-old Chinese man — realised that a total of 65,000 Thai baht, equivalent to approximately S$2,580, had gone missing during the journey.
Upon landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport, the victims promptly alerted authorities, triggering an immediate investigation. Airport police, together with airline staff, began inspecting passengers before they disembarked, treating the situation as a potential case of organised or opportunistic theft.
Suspicious Behaviour Caught Mid-Flight
Cabin crew later revealed that they had observed a passenger behaving suspiciously during the flight. The individual was reportedly seen rummaging through bags stored in the overhead compartments — a red flag that prompted closer scrutiny once the theft was reported.
Authorities identified the suspect as Zheng Xiaobo, whose name was transliterated from Thai sources. During a search, police discovered that he was carrying 16,020 baht (around S$630), along with other foreign currencies. This discovery further strengthened suspicions that he had been targeting unattended belongings mid-flight.
When questioned, Zheng allegedly confessed to the crime, according to local reports. The swift admission allowed officers to proceed with formal charges without prolonged investigation.
Charged and Taken Into Custody
Zheng has since been charged under laws relating to theft on public transport, specifically covering crimes committed on aircraft. He was taken into custody at the airport police station, where further legal proceedings are expected to take place.
Authorities also seized the recovered cash and any other items believed to be linked to the incident. The case underscores the legal seriousness of committing offences while travelling, especially within controlled environments like commercial flights.
Following the arrest, officials issued a reminder to travellers to remain vigilant, particularly when storing valuables in overhead compartments. Passengers are encouraged to keep cash, passports, and high-value items close to them at all times, rather than leaving them unattended.
