According to a media release, a 50-year-old woman from Wuhan almost died after eating leftover watermelon stored in her fridge.
The incident happened after the woman decided to finish up the leftover of watermelon that she bought 2 days ago. It is a common practice for people to keep their leftover fruits in the fridge for future consumption to prevent food wastage.
However, getting a bacterial infection from leftover food is the least expected.
The woman felt sick after she consumed the fruit and was rushed to the hospital the following day.
The woman condition became worst and could probably turn fatal if bacteria spread into her bloodstream causing sepsis and septic shock.
Luckily the doctors were able to put her condition under control.
According to a professor from the China Agricultural University, the root cause of bacterial growth is most likely due to:
- Warm temperature in the fridge
- The cleanliness of the fridge
To prevent such incident from happening, kindly take note of the above pointers. Please ensure that the fridge in your household remains at a cool temperature at all time and consistently clean the fridge to maintain its cleanliness.
