China woman tries to save husband after cobra bite, ends up poisoned herself
A woman in China was hospitalised after attempting to save her husband from a cobra bite by sucking venom from his wound, a move she reportedly learned from television.
The incident occurred in Yunnan province after the woman’s husband was bitten on the hand by a cobra while working in a field.
According to Chinese media reports, the man soon developed symptoms including swelling around the bite area, dizziness and weakness.
Panicking after seeing her husband’s condition worsen, the woman attempted to remove the venom by placing her mouth over the wound and sucking repeatedly.
However, the rescue attempt did not go as planned.
Wife develops symptoms after helping husband
After the husband was rushed to hospital for treatment, the woman also began experiencing health problems.
She reportedly developed numbness in her mouth, tongue, face and limbs shortly after coming into contact with the venom.
Her condition continued to deteriorate over the following day, with severe fatigue setting in.
Concerned family members eventually sent her to hospital as well, where doctors discovered that venom toxins had entered her bloodstream.
Medical staff treated both husband and wife with anti-venom serum and other medications.
Doctors warn against common snakebite myth
Fortunately, the couple recovered after receiving treatment and were discharged once their symptoms subsided and their condition stabilised.
Doctors involved in the case said many people mistakenly believe that sucking venom from a snakebite is an effective first-aid measure.
However, medical experts explained that venom can enter the body through tiny blood vessels and tissues inside the mouth, potentially poisoning the person attempting the rescue.
They stressed that trying to suck out venom is not recommended and may place another person at risk.
Seek medical help immediately
Hospital staff used the incident as a reminder that anyone bitten by a venomous snake should seek professional medical treatment as quickly as possible.
Medical professionals advise keeping the victim calm, limiting movement and getting them to a hospital immediately rather than attempting home remedies or techniques seen in movies and television shows.
While the woman acted out of concern for her husband, doctors said her well-intentioned efforts ultimately resulted in both of them requiring medical treatment.
Thankfully, both made a full recovery following prompt hospital care.
