A netizen shared how she visited a BBQ restaurant at Prinsep Street for a meal when she discovered a puzzling charge on her receipt.
She was apparently charged 50 cents for each chopstick that she used.
The woman then told her mother about the incident, and she is considering filing a complaint to CASE (Consumer Association of Singapore).
50 cents for chopsticks
The woman was dining at the restaurant with a colleague of hers and after their meal, as they were settling the bill, she discovered that she was charged separately for the chopsticks.
Chopsticks usually come in pairs, and she was charged 50 cents for each chopstick, hence $1 for the pair of chopsticks.
Seeing as they had no choice, the duo paid the bill despite being surprised at the unreasonable charges.
Chopsticks were “imported” and “high quality”
According to Shin Min Daily News, a staff member of the BBQ restaurant reasoned that the wooden chopsticks (which were disposable) were “specially imported” from China and that they are “high end”.
The staff member said that before they moved to their outlet at Prinsep Street, they provided the cutleries for free, but those were “typical chopsticks”.
After their expansion, they then decided to “upgrade” to the new “high-end” ones.
