Rich Chinese Customer Allegedly Flies Meituan Rider To Singapore To Buy S$13.50 Worth Of Curry Puffs

A bizarre food delivery story circulating online has left Singapore social media users questioning just how far some wealthy customers are willing to go for their favourite local food.

A Xiaohongshu user recently shared an unusual encounter at a Singapore food centre, claiming that a Meituan delivery rider suddenly appeared at the stall to collect an order. The sight of a delivery rider associated with the Chinese food delivery platform immediately caught her attention, as Meituan has not officially launched its food delivery operations in Singapore.

The situation became even more unusual when the rider reportedly explained that he had travelled from China specifically to collect food in Singapore. According to the post, the order involved curry puffs costing around S$13.50.

Rather than being a conventional local delivery, the story suggested that a wealthy customer in China had arranged for the food to be collected in Singapore and transported back across the border.

Rider’s Appearance Sparks Confusion

The Xiaohongshu poster said she, the stall staff and two business owners were initially confused when they saw the Meituan rider. She reportedly wondered whether Meituan had quietly begun operating in Singapore.

The explanation, however, appeared to be much more unusual.

According to the poster, the customer had apparently requested a customised cross-border arrangement and was willing to cover the rider’s travel and other expenses. The post did not identify the customer, the Chinese city where the food was supposedly headed, or the exact amount paid for the special arrangement.

This means the eye-catching claim that a wealthy Chinese customer effectively “flew a delivery rider to Singapore” should be treated cautiously. There is currently no independent confirmation that a customer actually paid for a commercial flight solely to collect the curry puffs.

The original post itself also contained plenty of uncertainty, with the author describing the incident as a possible “special international order” rather than claiming to know the complete logistics behind it.

Is Meituan Preparing To Enter Singapore?

The unusual appearance of Meituan-branded delivery riders in Singapore has nevertheless fuelled speculation that the Chinese technology company could be preparing to enter the local food delivery market.

Several commenters claimed they had recently spotted Meituan riders around Singapore, including near Holland Village. Others suggested that Meituan had already registered a company in Singapore and that the appearances could be part of an early promotional campaign.

However, these claims remain unverified based on the information contained in the original social media discussion.

One commenter suggested that the entire incident could be a Meituan marketing exercise, pointing to the rider’s uniform and equipment as reasons for suspicion. Another questioned why someone travelling internationally for a food collection would need to appear in a full delivery uniform.

The original poster eventually agreed that a promotional campaign was a possibility, particularly after seeing other reports of apparent Meituan activity around Singapore.

Singapore Delivery Market Could Get More Competitive

If Meituan does eventually enter Singapore, the move could add another major player to an already competitive food delivery market.

Singapore consumers currently have several established platforms competing for restaurant orders, delivery riders and customers. A new entrant with Meituan’s experience in China’s highly competitive online food delivery sector could potentially intensify competition through introductory promotions, vouchers and lower delivery fees.

That possibility has already generated excitement among some Singapore-based commenters.

Several users welcomed the idea of another food delivery platform, with some saying they hoped increased competition would result in better promotions and lower prices. Others joked that the arrival of a major Chinese platform could put pressure on existing operators.

For now, however, the curry puff incident remains an unusual social media story rather than confirmed evidence of a Meituan Singapore launch.

Whether the mysterious delivery rider was genuinely completing an extravagant cross-border order, participating in a promotional exercise, or simply involved in another arrangement remains unclear.

But one thing is certain: S$13.50 worth of curry puffs has managed to trigger a much bigger conversation about Singapore’s food delivery industry.
