Scoot Flight From Singapore To Taipei Turns Back Mid-Flight Due To ‘Operational Issues’

A Scoot flight travelling from Singapore to Taipei was forced to turn around several hours into its journey after the airline cited “operational reasons”.

Flight TR872 departed Singapore on 14 September and had been in the air for about three hours when passengers were informed by the pilot that the aircraft would be returning to Singapore.

Passenger Ethan told Mothership that he was initially confused by the announcement, as passengers were reportedly not given further details about the nature of the issue.

Passengers returned to Singapore

According to Ethan, some passengers became concerned after the announcement. He said the pilot reportedly told passengers that the aircraft did not have any technical issues, but did not elaborate on what the “operational issue” involved.

Ethan also approached a flight attendant for clarification but said the crew member did not have additional information to provide.

The aircraft eventually landed back at Changi Airport at around 5:50pm, approximately five hours after its initial departure from Singapore.

In response to media queries, a Scoot spokesperson confirmed that TR872 had been diverted because of “operational reasons”.

Replacement aircraft deployed

Scoot subsequently arranged a replacement aircraft for passengers affected by the disruption. The replacement flight departed Singapore for Taipei at approximately 8:05pm on the same day.

Ethan said passengers were initially informed that they would receive meal vouchers that could be used at Changi Airport. However, upon returning to Singapore, ground staff reportedly told passengers that meal vouchers were unavailable because of the short turnaround time before the replacement flight.

Instead, passengers were provided with light refreshments at the boarding gate. These reportedly included a chocolate croissant, potato crackers, a bread roll and a small bottle of water.

Ethan eventually boarded the replacement flight to Taipei. During the flight, passengers were reportedly provided with a complimentary hot meal, with choices including three-bean tofu curry with rice or braised chicken with rice.

Travel plans disrupted

The disruption caused changes to Ethan’s travel arrangements. He had originally planned to travel south to Chiayi after arriving at Taoyuan International Airport.

However, because the replacement flight arrived after midnight, he said he had to arrange accommodation near the airport and postpone his journey to Chiayi until the following day.

Some affected passengers were also travelling onwards from Taipei to Seoul, South Korea.

Flight tracking information showed that the onward flight to Seoul departed after 2am on 15 September. The delayed connection reportedly resulted in the affected journey arriving around seven hours and 39 minutes later than originally scheduled.

Refunds and alternative flights offered

Scoot said affected passengers were offered several options following the disruption. These included booking an alternative Scoot flight or requesting a full refund if they decided not to continue with their journey.

Passengers who had purchased their tickets through travel agencies or partner airlines were advised to contact those parties directly for assistance.

The airline said the safety of its passengers and crew remains its top priority and apologised for the disruption and inconvenience caused by the incident.

The airline did not provide further details on what specifically led to the flight being turned around, describing the reason only as “operational reasons”.
