Beansprouts, a polarizing vegetable that has its enthusiasts and detractors, took center stage in an unexpected and potentially hazardous incident involving a piece of beansprout that led to a woman being sent to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department of a hospital,
The Unfortunate Ordeal Unfolds
The woman at the center of this story, Vanessa Chia, posted a video on her TikTok page @wafflenessa to recount her experience.
She said that she had eaten some rojak and mala for lunch. Sensing something stuck in her throat, she initially attributed it to the ‘heaty’ nature of the foods she had eaten. Attempts to alleviate the discomfort with water proved futile.
The situation escalated later that night when, after a sudden cough, the woman discovered something dangling from the back of her throat. Despite efforts to extract it, including using tweezers, the foreign object remained lodged, which scared her and she stopped trying to take it out because she feared it could be part of her throat.
Faced with persistent discomfort the next day, the woman and her boyfriend sought treatment at a polyclinic. Urgently referred to the A&E, she underwent multiple tests, including an X-ray, to assess the situation. Eight hours later, a doctor conducted an endoscopy, revealing an object stuck in her throat.
Endoscopic Intervention and the Surprising Discovery
During the endoscopy, medical professionals encountered challenges in extracting the object using a smaller tube. After some rest, a nurse successfully removed the first object. However, to their astonishment, they discovered “something else” still obstructing the woman’s throat, necessitating a repeated procedure.
In a surprising twist, the subsequent extraction revealed a beansprout, complete with its root. The woman shared that the doctor was initially incredulous, repeatedly asking if it was a fish bone.
Despite the traumatic experience, the woman maintains her affinity for beansprouts, albeit with a heightened sense of caution. She expressed that the incident has made her a “little bit more careful” when indulging in her favorite vegetable.
In a subsequent video on TikTok, Chia shared a photo of the beansprout dangling at the back of her throat.
