The Singapore men’s under-22 football team failed to qualify from the SEA Games group stages following a lacklustre 0-0 draw against Laos on 6 May, exiting the competition with 0 wins despite still having one more remaining group game against Malaysia.
Having already lost to both Vietnam and Thailand, Singapore had to win to have some semblance of hope to go through to the knockout stages.
In the 64th minute, Nicky Melvin Singh won a penalty for Singapore after coming on as a substitute, and the responsibility of the penalty fell on the shoulders of Syahadat Masnawi.
However, Syahadat tried to fool the goalkeeper and failed terribly, sending his shot flying above the goalpost and presumably killing a few birds in the sky in the process.
The commentator summed up his penalty miss perfectly: “Oh he’s missed! Oh my goodness…” and by the time you are reading this, Syahadat’s shot might still be steadily soaring above the stratosphere.
Both sides tried to go for the win, and Singapore had more chances to score but just like me with my ex-girlfriend, Singapore simply can’t finish.
The game ended 0-0 with Singapore haplessly and hopelessly exiting the competition despite having 1 more game left to play, marking the 5th consecutive year of failing to qualify for the knockout stages, and 10 years since Singapore won a medal.

- What world cup? Cant even go thru sea games lah…
- all the wrong people are handling and there has not been any improvement but decline in our team performance. Really sad.
- The way our no.9 balloon that penalty sums up our level of standard. Even our own defence was trying to score against our own goal. Total disgrace these flops put on our national emblem on our jersey
- It will not change. Because starting w the development of youths is unfounded. U21s are plagued w favouritism. Even players who cannot play football, were selected because strings are pulled. Whereas the others are ousted w no clubs. The young ones are the same too. So much of the national call ups for U13 onwards. All strings attached. And then you wonder why at nationals we messed up like this. Such a joke!
- Machiam look like as if they just lost a cup final?! Please lah, you lost all three group games; don’t feel so sad. Old young lions should be quite used to it alreadyÂ
- This cannot be acceptable!! The FAS team all must resign!! Heads must roll and it must start with the management team!!! I demand accountability!!
