A dispute between a man and his ex-girlfriend escalated into a violent incident, leading to the stabbing of the woman’s male friend and her subsequent abduction, which triggered a police manhunt.
Mohamed Shabiq Mohamed Anwar, aged 22, was apprehended after being witnessed stabbing the woman. He was sentenced on Thursday (25 May) to three years in prison, six strokes of the cane, and a fine of $1,000.
In addition to his conviction, Shabiq, who had engaged in a car chase with the police and was found to be driving without a valid license, was prohibited from obtaining any class of driving license for three years after his release.
He had previously pleaded guilty to various charges, including two counts of assault, one count of abduction, and multiple traffic offences.
To protect the privacy of the assault victims, their identities were withheld in court records.
Background
On July 31, 2022, Shabiq had a disagreement with a 21-year-old woman because she had gone home instead of waiting for him while he finished his gym session.
In response, Shabiq, who had previously made threats to harm his ex-girlfriend, visited her residence to confront her.
Concerned for her safety, the woman confided in a 21-year-old male friend about the incident and arranged to meet him after work over the following days.
On August 2, 2022, the friend met the woman near her workplace at approximately 8:20 p.m. They proceeded to a nearby car park at Block 213, Serangoon Avenue 4, where the friend had parked his car.
Unbeknownst to them, Shabiq was lying in wait nearby. As he approached the couple, Shabiq confronted the woman about their earlier argument.
In a violent altercation, Shabiq struck the woman, causing her to fall to the ground. Witnessing this, her male friend intervened, resulting in a physical altercation between the two men.
Using a pair of scissors, Shabiq repeatedly stabbed the friend, targeting his head, chest, and shoulders. He ceased his assault only when the friend managed to restrain him. Upon being released, Shabiq forcefully took hold of his ex-girlfriend, encircling her neck with his arm and brandishing the scissors.
He forcibly dragged the woman into a rental car and drove away.
The incident was promptly reported to the police, and the injured friend received medical attention at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He was subsequently granted five days of hospitalization leave.
Later, the rented car was sighted by the police in Woodlands. An unmarked police vehicle pulled up alongside it at a traffic junction between Woodlands Avenue 6 and Woodlands Avenue 7, signalling Shabiq to stop the vehicle.
Instead of complying, Shabiq accelerated, leading to a pursuit by the police. Eventually, he ran a red light and collided with two stationary vehicles, causing substantial damage exceeding $12,600.
Despite the accident, Shabiq continued driving until he abandoned the car on Northshore Drive in Punggol. He and the woman then proceeded to Punggol Avenue 17 on foot.
Around 12:30 a.m. on August 3, 2022, a group of patrolling police officers noticed the pair. One officer witnessed Shabiq stabbing the woman with the scissors and drew his firearm.
Shabiq surrendered shortly after, and an ambulance transported the injured woman, who had suffered a severe neck wound and other injuries, to Sengkang General Hospital. She was subsequently granted 23 days of medical leave.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Shabiq had driven without a valid license on 58 occasions between May 16 and August 2 2022. Furthermore, it was discovered that Shabiq had engaged in the fraudulent activity of assuming another person’s identity to rent multiple vehicles.
