What do you think of the “no taking MC” culture in Singapore?
People at my workplace are sooooo afraid of taking MCs. Too many times they’d come to work even when they’re really really sick and it’s becoming a problem as the virus will spread. Recently there was a flu bug around, and literally the entire office was coughing and sneezing. it started with one guy who had a cold and it spread like wildfire throughout the office. Some would even come to work looking half-dead only to ask to go back home halfway through cause they “can’t take it”.
These people refuse to take MC because they’re afraid it’ll affect their performance grading and they’ll “feel bad” as others will have to tank their workload. With some saying that even if they’re sick and do little work at work, but at least they’re still physically present at work so the bosses can see them ???????? But shouldn’t health come first? Granted maybe you’re living alone, but what about your other colleagues at work who have kids or vulnerable adults at home? Isn’t that too selfish on your end?
Granted, some may say that people always abuse the MC system and will strategically take on MC during long weekends, but if you’re sick, you’re sick and these things abusing of MC is really easy to tell.
Why do people still choose to come to work if they’re sick? If minor cough i get it but not when your office table is full of your mucus-filled tissues like dudeeeeee.

- Lol what. In my current workplace, people take mc like nobody business. Already encountered a couple who finished their 14 days of entitlement and are on NPL if they take more mc. Sometimes people don’t get their roster request, they take mc. Nowadays with those damn cheap tele-consultations, very easy for them to take mc.
- sick : go to work as per normal
holiday/ hangover from last nite : time to take mc - Kinda opposite in my workplace. If you come in with a viral plague, people will ask if you are well/outright tell you to leave and go see a doctor/work from home instead.
