Demoted for being the highest performer
My boss called me to tell me I was being demoted two levels this week. I had the highest performance review scores for Q1.
I was promoted earlier this year, but they never backfilled my role and are now suffering for it.
Everyone is so happy to have me back in the role because of how well I did in that position. I went along with the change and gave it my heartiest “team player” attitude response to the news.
What they don’t know if I’m giving my two weeks notice next week for a job that pays 60% more than my current role.
I can’t believe how stupid some companies are when it comes to treating their people.
Edit: I am not getting a pay decrease. I was on a leadership team and now I am going to be doing two jobs and be forced to report to someone who has had it out for me since day one, as well as a title change.
I’m choosing to do the two weeks because of my other coworkers that I have become really close to during my time there.
I know if I just up and left they would be the ones to actually take the brunt of the impact. I kept the post pretty vague because I know people at my work are active online.

- When they ask why you’re leaving be explicitly clear.
YOU demoted me to my old position because YOU failed to refill my old position. I have 0 incentive to work here because performance clearly doesn’t mean anything and I have no further to go in this company seeing as promotions aren’t an option so you’ve left me no choice but to leave.
By disregarding your star employees YOU WILL LOSE YOUR STAR EMPLOYEES. Thank you and goodbye, I appreciate learning how not to manage people for my future career. - Curious, why even bother giving notice? Why not just tell ’em you’re bouncing on your last day?
When they ask why, you ask them why they would demote their highest performer and then expect them to continue working there?
I’d love to be the proverbial fly on the wall when all this goes down. Please let us know how it goes! Good Luck with new job OP!
