Serious ah, I was sitting at my desk today looking at some old notes and it just hit me. We spent how many years mugging algebra, redox reactions, and the history of the Cold War just to end up doing what?
Most of us out here working 9-to-6, only using Excel, Outlook, and maybe some basic common sense (which is quite rare also).
- Algebra: When was the last time you need to find x at work? Unless x is the reason why the pantry ran out of oat milk, I don’t care. My boss never ask me to solve quadratic equations to meet the KPI.
- Chemistry: I spent so much time memorizing the Periodic Table and titration colors. Now the only chemistry I deal with is the “lack of chemistry” between me and my teammates during project meetings.
- Physics: Calculating the velocity of a ball rolling down a slope? For what? The only thing rolling down a slope is my mental health on a Monday morning.
- History: Learning about the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the League of Nations. Bro, I can’t even remember what I discussed in the meeting last week, you want me to analyze the Treaty of Versailles?
I feel like we were scammed by the system. We burn our youth for the “Paper Chase,” but 90% of the jobs out there just need you to be “teachable” and know how to talk to people without sounding like a bot.
Sometimes I think the only reason we learn all this high-level stuff is just to prove we can tahan the stress and the “sian-ness.”
Does anyone actually use their O-Level or Uni knowledge daily, or are we all just “fake it till you make it” only?
TL;DR: Study so high for what? Work only use 5% of brain power, the rest is just wayang and arrowing people.
