Surge in Covid-19 Cases Reported in Thailand: 324,692 Cases In 2025

The Ministry of Public Health has announced a concerning rise in Covid-19 infections across several provinces in Thailand, coinciding with the onset of the rainy season and the reopening of schools. As of June 4, 2025, the country has recorded a total of 324,692 Covid-19 cases and 69 fatalities since the beginning of the year.

Factors Contributing to the Surge

Health officials attribute the increase in cases to multiple factors, including the early rains, the return of students to classrooms, and the emergence of the XEC variant, which is noted for its high transmissibility. Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin, Director General of the Department of Medical Services, expressed concern over the rising infection rates and emphasized the need for the public to remain vigilant in their health practices.

The current wave of infections has predominantly affected the 608 group—older adults with pre-existing health conditions—who are particularly vulnerable to severe outcomes. Major cities such as Bangkok, Chon Buri, Chanthaburi, and Chiang Mai have reported the highest number of cases and fatalities.

Current Statistics and Health Recommendations

Between January 1 and June 3, 2025, the incidence rate of Covid-19 in Thailand has reached 500.20 cases per 100,000 people. The highest rates of infection have been observed in Bangkok, Chon Buri, Rayong, Phuket, and Nakhon Pathom, with clusters emerging in schools, prisons, military camps, and hospitals.

Despite the increase in cases, the overall death rate remains low at 0.106 per 100,000 people, indicating that the severity of the disease has not escalated significantly. Health officials are urging the public to adhere to preventive measures, including social distancing, wearing masks, and getting vaccinated.

Dr. Sutthas Chotnaphan, Deputy Director General of the Department of Disease Control, noted that the current XEC variant behaves similarly to the common cold, with low hospitalization rates. However, individuals experiencing severe symptoms, particularly those in high-risk groups, should seek immediate medical attention.

Precautions for Schools and Communities

With schools reopening, there is heightened concern about the potential for children to contract Covid-19 and subsequently transmit it to vulnerable family members. Health authorities recommend that schools implement measures to allow sick students to stay home without closing entire classes, as school-age children are generally not considered high-risk.

The Ministry of Public Health continues to monitor the situation closely and encourages the public to remain proactive in protecting their health. Key recommendations include frequent handwashing, avoiding large gatherings, and wearing masks, especially during the initial days of illness.

In conclusion, as Thailand navigates this surge in Covid-19 cases, collective action and adherence to health guidelines will be crucial in mitigating the spread of the virus and protecting the most vulnerable populations.Bookmark messageCopy messageExport
