A group of six students met on their bicycles; amongst them was the deceased, a 13-year-old girl who was trying to ride a “fixie” bicycle without brakes.
She reportedly rode down the ramp from the 7th floor to the 6th floor of the carpark, was unable to brake, hit the wheel block of a parking space and was flung off the railing at the 6th storey.
She managed to grab hold of the railing at the last second but in the end, she couldn’t hold on to it and eventually let go, falling six floors to her death.
This fatal, freak-accident happened on January 8, earlier this year at the multi-storey carpark at Block 526A, Pasir Ris Street 51.
The deceased was a secondary-two student at Hai Sing Catholic School.
Inquiries into the case were started this morning, where the investigator in charge submitted the testimonies of the witnesses and the father of the deceased.
Before the incident, the deceased had packed up her bag after school and went with her classmates to ride the fixie bikes (without brakes) at the carpark.
Three of her male classmates brought their own fixie bikes, of which the deceased borrowed one from them and took it for a trial ride.
She found that it was hard to balance and was difficult to ride.
After riding for a while, she rode from the 6th floor to the 7th floor, before she went down the ramp from the 7th floor to the 6th.
However, after riding down the ramp, she couldn’t stop at all (because the bike didn’t have any brakes); she crashed into the railing and was thrown off it, and although she managed to grab hold of the railing, she couldn’t hold on to it. The other students who were present couldn’t get to her in time, she then lost her grip on the railing and fell to her death.
The investigator said that when he rushed to the scene, the deceased’s pelvis was at an unnatural angle. Paramedics present at the scene said her pelvis was broken because of the fall.
She had no pulse and was pronounced dead on the spot.
